This club is going down! Everton have just been hit with THE BIGGEST POINTS DEDUCTION in Premier League history as they were found guilty of fraudulent profit and financial maneuvers.
It really is a shame how far this once great franchise has fallen.
In what is the biggest points deduction in Premier League history, Everton has been docked 1o POINTS from their current league standings as they’ve fallen all the way back down to 19th in the league as the Premier League found them guilty of breaching the league’s profit and sustainability rules. And, if further compensation claims work against the Toffees, then the club is going to be up a creek without a paddle, boat, lifejacket, and surrounded by 300 hungry sharks.
I know this article may sound a little dramatic and “world-endy” for a lot of you guys reading, but the 10-point penalty Everton have suffered may be enough to ship them down to the Championship in their own right.
For those who haven’t heard the news, Everton, who used to be 14th in the league with 14 points on the board, were docked a Premier League-record 10 points and dropped down into 19th on just 4 points (2 points away from safety) due to the financial mishandling of the club’s financial records by the Farhad Moshiri ownership group.
How bad did Everton mismanage their finances? Well, the club posted losses of £372 million in just three seasons (2020-2023)…which is £250 million MORE than what the Premier League allows clubs to have in said timeframe. That’s pretty bad, right?
I mean, not only have the Toffees fallen from a very comfortable position (for the state of the club these days) in 14th and sitting a good 8 points above the relegation zone to being stuck right in the middle of the muck and mire of the Bottom-3, but their impressive and morale-boosting wins against Bournemouth (3-0), West Ham (1-0), Brentford (1-0), and this past weekend’s 3-2 last-gasp win over Crystal Palace all count for jack shit.
Oh, and did I mention that they’re current 3-game unbeaten run, which is incredible for a club in such a dire situation as Everton is at the moment, has amassed them a grand total of -10 points! Yes, Everton won 7 points from these three games, they much had all of those gains wiped off the board in the 10-point deduction, and they were docked with another -3 points just for good measure.
I’m not sure about you guys, but if I was in these player’s shoes and saw all my hard work against very competent teams in West Ham (reigning 2023 UEFA Conference League winners), Brighton (finished 7th last season), and Crystal Palace (have steadily been in the Premier League for over a decade) count for absolutely nothing and an extra negative three points on top of that, my confidence would take a slight hit.
And that’s not even the worst news out of this disaster for Everton.
No, being forced to make up 2 points on the lowly Luton Town to break out of the Relegation Zone isn’t great, but it’s not impossible. What is impossible is if Everton are docked ANOTHER 9 POINTS if the compensation cases against Everton’s illegal financial woes by Leeds United (relegated in 2022/23), Southampton (relegated 2022/23), Leicester City (relgated 2022/23), and Burnley (relegated 2021/22) is successful.
These clubs are demanding a mass payment of more than £300 million, which is obviously far more than the current administration is able to payout. And, even worse, Everton’s new incoming owners, 777 Group, have stated that they will back out of the deal if Everton are forced to pay these record-breaking compensation picks.
Thus, if Everton can’t pay and the club is forced to go into administration, the Toffees will automatically be docked another 9 points on top of the 10-point deduction to bring the grand tally of points taking off Everton’s record to 19. And, if you’re doing the math, that would push Everton down to -5 points on the season and a full 9 points behind Luton Town for 17th place in the Premier League.
There’s no way Everton is overcoming a 19-point deduction to survive relegation for a third straight year. No way in hell!!!
So, we’ll have to wait and see if these cases against Everton are successful or if Everton’s appeal works and they gain their points back, but either way, it makes for great T.V. to watch.
