How unfortunate is this guy?!?! The Raiders quarterback (for now) Jimmy Garoppolo has just been hit with a two-game suspension for the start of the 2024/25 season…because of unauthorized PED use during the offseason.
This is such a ridiculous story.
Despite being frozen out of the Raiders team over the last few months, Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended by the NFL for unauthorized PED use to make for one of the most ridiculous stories of the offseason yet. And, I really don’t know what else to say about this stupidity!
I get that Jimmy G is being suspended for prescribed medication use (which is a little silly in its own right so long as it’s not a major PED like steroids, but that’s beside the point), but how do you put yourself in this situation? And especially so when you center this narrative around Jimmy Garoppolo!
Not only is Garoppolo playing in the single most high-profile positions in all of football with him being a quarterback, but he has also been completely frozen out of the Raiders (and really NFL) system since November 1st. How did he not realize that he needed to get permission from the NFL to use a prescribed medication before taking it? And did he really not have the time on his hands to go and get his medication authorized?
Like I said, the guy has been sitting on his coach for the last four months since rookie Aidan O’Connell took his starting spot with his then league-leading 11 interception season. Could he really not take the time to get off his couch and get approval for a simple medication? It was really that hard?
I don’t even know where to go with Jimmy Garoppolo anymore.
The guy has probably played himself out of a starting spot in the NFL with his career lows (as a healthy starter) in passer rating (77.0), passing yards (1,205), passing touchdowns (7), completion percentage (65.1%), wins (3), and a TD-INT ratio of 0.78-1…which is utterly horrible.
So, to go from being a starter on a Super Bowl and NFC championship contender to now looking at getting cut from one of the worst teams in the NBA over the last 20 seasons is really a massive drop-off for the guy who was supposed to be the heir apparent to Tom Brady in New England. But do you know what is an even bigger drop-off than that?
Going from a $11.25M base salary guarantee to $0 because he got suspended for illegal PED use!
Yes, even though Garoppolo is almost assuredly going to be cut before reaching his $11.25M bonus for being on an NFL roster come the start of the new NFL year in mid-March, Jimmy G still would have been entitled to an $11.25M salary guarantee if he avoided suspension and other conduct detrimental to the Raiders.
But he was either too ignorant or lazy or both to get permission to use his non-authorized medication; so, the Raiders now have full authority to not only cut him before his $11.25M roster bonus, but they can also remove his $11.25M base salary guarantee Or, in other words, the guy has just lost out on $22.5M for being a complete waste of space during the regular season and an utter buffoon during the offseason.
What a fall from grace Jimmy Garoppolo has gone through!
