This is the very worst of all worst comic book films. Marvel and Sony might very well have made the last of franchise-building films as Madame Web is going down as the SINGLE-WORST comic book movie ever!
I really can’t believe comic book films have fallen this low.
Despite 2023 being the year of the worst comic book films ever, Sony and Marvel’s Madame Web trumped them all for this film is the very worst abomination to come out of the utter sledge of comic book films. And, to be honest, I don’t think we’ll ever see a film as bad as Madame Web again!
Yes, this is one of the worst movies ever made. And that’s probably an understatement given the fallout from this film.
So, for those who haven’t seen the nuclear fallout that is Madame Web, you have survived the radiation affect that will doom the rest of us in the years to come. Congratulations.
But, being serious, Madame Web is really one of the worst comic book films that has ever been filmed. Not only is this film the single worst box office flop for comic book films since the start of the millennium, but the film is also one of the worst rated movies among movie goers, Marvel fans, AND critics alike.
The film, which released during the Valentine’s Day holiday, has a projected total gross of just $26M across its opening 5-day week. Just $26M! Do you know how horrific that is? The Marvels, which was widely seen as the biggest box office flop for comic book films of all time, grossed over $54M in its opening week, and it didn’t even come out on one of the most popular holidays of the year (it came out on some random Friday in November)!
Seriously, Madame Web is on pace to only earn HALF of what The Marvels made during their, respective, opening box office weeks. HALF!!!!! How is this possible?!?!?!
This film couldn’t even outpace a little advertised biopic about Bob Marley (Bob Marley: One Love grossed close to $50M over the same timeframe). And, no, this biopic isn’t on the level of Oppenheimer with huge advertising campaigns, fantastic source material, A-list stars out the wazoo to fill the primary roles, and one of the greatest directors ever sowing the project together.
Bob Marley: One Love is a passable, unfulfilling biopic about the legendary singer with really underwhelming leads in Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch (not household stars by any means). It’s “eh”….and Madame Web couldn’t even gross half of what this film made during the SAME EXACT TIMEFRAME!!!
And that’s not even the worst part of this story for Madame Web currently has a 2.4/10 Metacritic review from fans, a 27/100 Metacritic review from critics, a 3.8/10 score on IMDb, a 43% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 13% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, you read that right, Madame Web has a 13% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes…which is really quite shocking as that’s the lowest score among ALL major review sites with BOTH categories.
Now, Madame Web is a Sony-Marvel project, so that may be why these critics were able to ACTUALLY write how they feel about the state of Marvel without the overbearing Disney breathing down their necks. But that still doesn’t justify how AWFUL this movie really is.
What bozo greenlit this trainwreck? Who at Sony allowed this project to be made for the big screen as their job should be on the line for this. This movie is that terrible!
Every single actor, whether it be the film’s leading stars in Dakota Johnson and Syndey Sweeney or the minor-know actors and actresses, were HORRIBLE in their portrayals, the very premise of the movie is boring, bland, and completely uninspired, the use of ADR in regular scenes (aka: non-action/stunt scenes) for a film of this magnitude is a sin against cinema, the CGI was piss poor, the set designs were bland, and the costumes were pitiful.
As I said, this movie is just a massive trainwreck…which makes me question WHY DID SONY MAKE A FILM ABOUT MADAME WEB IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
Does anyone actually know who this character even is? This character is so obscure in the Marvel comic lore that she makes Blue Bettle look like a household name.
I mean, I really think that this film being completely crap actually helped Sony and Marvel’s HORRIFIC adaptation of Madame Web through Dakota Johnson’s casting. Why? Well, it’s because Madame Web is not a young, spry crime fighter as Dakota Johnson portrays in the film, but rather a crippled, blind old lady!
Yeah.
This film is just so awful that I really recommend therapy after seeing it, and even that might not be enough to clear your mind of the rot that Madame Web will leave behind after watching it.
