Dragon’s Dogma 2 Looks INSANELY GOOD!!!

Dragon's Dogma 2 Looks INSANELY GOOD!!! (Capcom-Dragon's Dogma 2-1st Trailer)

This could challenge Legend of Zelda for Game of the Year. Dragon’s Dogma is at last getting a much-needed sequel in the form of Dragon’s Dogma 2…which is shaping up to be a game even better than its legendary predecessor.

Capcom is having an utterly amazing year.

Capcom have finally greenlit a sequel for their famous action-RPG, fantasy adventure game, Dragon’s Dogma, as they unveiled the very first trailer for Dragon’s Dogma 2 at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. And, as you could probably tell, I’m super excited for this game.

The original Dragon’s Dogma is one of the most underrated, underappreciated fantasy RPG games in the fantasy genre as it provides an extremely compelling story, some of the best combat mechanics for its era (released 2012), extremely cool, unique fantasy ideas that heavily influenced some later epic fantasy games (aka: Elden Ring), and one of the most creative follower systems in the RPG genre.

It’s honestly one of the best pure action-RPG games ever made, which makes it all the sadder that this game is undervalued and overlooked by so many gamers, review outlets, developers, etc. in the space. The 2012 original sold really well in Japan (300k sales in its debut month in Japan), which was the most receptive market for the game early on, but the Western markets really didn’t take to the game and it eventually fell off the best-selling charts just a few months after its release.

Nevertheless, this new game looks like it’s going to be even better than the original as the updated graphics and new combat mechanics/delivery are sensational. Obviously, a 1:41-minute trailer isn’t going to give us an in-depth look at how the gameplay, cutscenes, story, combat, etc. will be, but what was shown looks as good as anything else in the genre so far.

There’s a very heavy inspiration from Elden Ring, the Dark Souls series, and the Elder Scrolls series in the very shots of characters, locations, creatures, and locations from what I’ve seen, but that’s only to be expected as those games are some of the very best in the fantasy RPG/action RPG genre.

To break down the similarities a little further, the characters and creature designs are more akin to the Elder Scrolls as this trailer showcased Khajit-like humanoids and dragon designs, while the combat, world creation (aka: how the world looks, the textures interacting with one another), and spell systems are more like what one would expect in Elden Ring or the Dark Souls series.

Now, there’s not much known about the story other than the Arisen (see what I mean when I say it’s like Elden Ring? Though, the Arisen actually came before the Tarnished) must defeat the Dragon of the end times and reclaim their heart from the overgrown lizard. You know, the broad story beats of the original game.

I’m really excited with the new AI and physics technology promoted on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 website, but it’s just too early for us to get any more involved in the nitty-gritty of this game.

Capcom will do a great job with this title, so we just need to give them the time to complete it.
