This looks like a very promising…and bloody…season. HBO has recently released the latest trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2, and the upcoming series looks great…despite the issues coming from Season 1’s ending.
I hope this season is three times as good as Season 1!
In the first trailer for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, HBO has released brand new footage in the form of a teaser trailer for the upcoming new season of House of the Dragon, and the show really looks as if Westeros has come to life from George R.R. Martin’s pages. Though, I’m still pretty nervous about how events will be portrayed in this season.
Okay, unlike my rather unhinged, fanboy-obsessed coverage leading up to the release of House of the Dragon Season 1, I’m going to be far more cautious and reserved in my hype for this upcoming season. And, in doing so, I’ve got to say that even though I really, really liked what I saw in the new trailer, I’m still a little nervous for how Ryan Condal, who is now spearheading the show alone, will take the show’s narrative direction in contrast to the books.
First off, let me just say that all of the costumes, set designs, cinematography, lighting, VFXs, special effects, stuntmen and coordinators, and visuals looked UNBELIEVABLY good in this trailer. If there’s one thing House of the Dragon has done 300X better than Game of Thrones, it’s actually making Westeros look like George R.R. Martin’s Westeros.
Obviously, HOTD has the benefit of hindsight, establishment, and hundreds of millions more in its budget than GOT had during Seasons 1 & 2, but the costumes and sets from just this trailer alone looked exactly how one would picture places like King’s Landing and Dragonstone and houses like House Targaryen, House Velaryon, House Hightower, House Rosby (which was the pink and white-shield guys), House Stokeworth (which was the green shield with a lamb on it people), etc.
The show’s cinematography, set design, costume department, etc. deserves all the awards and praises it will undoubtedly receive.
Nevertheless, I’m still really nervous Ryan Condal is going to come up with a 75% fantastic plotline mixed in with some of the dumbest, most asinine events that one could possibly imagine and muddle the Dance of the Dragons impact. Like I said in the intro, there’s going to be A LOT of death, carnage, and EXTREMELY JARRING scenes in this season. And I mean JARRING!!!!
Some fan favorite characters are going to have a lot of really, really, really bad, dark, and depressing things happen to them (minor hint: watch that Helaena scene in the trailer again for a better idea of what I mean), and Ryan Condal MUST completely write it out or else this series is going to be a total letdown.
Again, I’m not saying the whole series is tainted or the holdover mistakes, such as Rhaenys’ moronic dragonpit scene, Lucerys’ stupid accidental death, and pretty much everything from Episodes 9 and 10, will ruin what should be a far more action-heavy, fast-paced Season 2 (the whole Dance is under 3 years in the books), but Condal and his writing team can’t make any more boneheaded narrative deviations like those ones and not expect the Dance to lose its potency.
It’s still way too early to predict anything else about the show, so I’ll happily wait and see how future trailers shape out this season.
